A new kind of fashion fantasy

Started as a reaction to an increasing reliance on post-production, PYLOT is a biannual fashion and documentary photography publication with a strict all-analogue, no-beauty retouching policy.

I was the Design Director from issue 1 to issue 8. In this time I helped establish and guide its aesthetic direction.

Celebrating analogue

The magazine graphically explores the space between the urgency of a lo-fi zine and the aspirational fantasy of a conventional fashion publication.

I took opportunities to emphasise the physicality of the printed page: texture was applied to typography by printing out, distressing and scanning headlines back in; paper stock would subtly switch between coated and uncoated; the orientation of articles would switch, so the magazine had to be rotated to read.

“Inspired by the iconoclastic spirit of Nick Logan’s The Face, PYLOT is equally revolutionary, a response to those who said both print and analogue photography were dying.”

A digital home

In addition to the print issue, PYLOT publishes content online that has been specially commissioned for the digital platform.

I designed and built the website and e-commerce store, incorporating a content management system so new features can be uploaded regularly by the team.
